Classes, Concerts and more ....   

  Classes for 2024

** Please select your desired classes ahead of time via the Class Selection link, which will be sent to enrolled students **

(all classes use A=440)


  Morning  Classes start at 9 am - small ensembles of like instruments: recorders, viols, or flutes, as selected by the student.  Within the

                              ensemble playing, instructors will address applicable technical details.  Recorder classes will be assigned by playing level.

                   

 Afternoon Coached Consorts - Small mixed instrument consorts or all recorder consorts, as selected by the student.  Consorts will be assigned

                                                         by playing level.
 

Large Ensembles

    Renaissance Band  (Stew Carter) - all manner of of instruments encouraged: winds, strings, percussion & what ever else you have brought with you. 

    All-Workshop Ensemble  (Eric Haas) - spend the early evening with Eric Haas and his glorious, rich, sonorous arrangements for

                                                     instruments and voices


English Country Dancing (Ellen Delahanty)- finish the evening with a dance.  Of course, we have live music!  Join the band or join the dancers.  All dances are

                                               taught and called.  If you love to dance, you must join us!  If you have never gotten to try dancing before, here is your chance!


Percussion Classes (Danny Mallon)

        Rhythm for all - a fun and interactive way for musicians of any level to improve rhythm skills without instruments. 

                                          New ideas and techniques each year.  (all levels welcome)

       Frame drumming - begin or improve your skills with the frame drum and arabic tambourine.  Frame drums are readily available for purchase on-line

                                         if you need one.

       Percussion Solutions for Consorts & Ensembles - We will focus on adding appropriate percussion accompaniment for your home ensembles.  Please 

                                bring  music to share and your usual workshop instruments.   Bring percussion instruments if you have them, especially those you want to 

                                improve your technique on, such as tambourine. 


Crumhorn Consort (Chris Rua)- Calling all  crumhorns to this great ensemble!  There are generally a few instruments available to borrow if you need one.


Early brass class (sackbut, cornetto) (Stew Carter)- Finger techniques for cornetto, slide positions for sackbut. Articulation techniques based on period sources.

                                                                                                  Early repertoire for brass instruments.


Bass Recorder Consort (James Young)- join this Low Consort encompassing all sizes of bass recorder. What a fabulous sound!


Vocal Ensemble with instrumental accompaniment (Ellen Delahanty)- do you enjoy singing early music?  Join the Vocal Ensemble!   

                                      Instrumentalists encouraged to provide accompaniment.  Recorder, flute & viol welcome. Intermediate 2 and above)


Baroque Sonatas (Geert van Gele & Patty Halverson) - a coached ensemble class for Alto recorder, Baroque Flute, and Viol continuo.

                                                                                               Music will be sent to you ahead of time.

The Two-part motets of Orlando di Lasso (James Young)- play and delve into the rhythm, meter and imitation in the Renaissance

                                                                                     (Intermediate 2 and above, recorder and viols)


From Dufay to Bach: Compositional Practices of the Giants of Early Music (Stew Carter)- a musical history visit to the late Medieval,

                                                                             Renaissance, and Baroque periods.  Lecture combined with playing, so bring your instruments. (all levels)


Contemporary Music

        Truly Contemporary (Majbritt Christensen)- newly composed recorder ensemble music.  (Intermediate 2 and above)

        Beyond Baroque  (Chris Rua) - traditional, jazz and other fun pieces, arranged for recorders.  (fluency with chromatics needed: intermediate 1 and above)


Try a new instrument!   (instruments generously loaned by workshop students)
       
Intro to Viols: Try A Viol ! (Patty Halverson) - Give this wonderful instrument a try under the guidance of a wonderful teacher. You may fall in love.  Most of

                                                                                                 the workshop viol players started with this class way back when.

       Intro to Harp: Try A Harp (Helen Thornton) - Have you always wanted to try playing harp?  Here is your chance!


Yoga for Musicians - Adaptive yoga for all physical abilities.   Taught by Majbritt Young Christianson, certified instructor.


Master class  perform something you or your group has carefully prepared and receive  gentle coaching by the teachers. Anyone of any level

                           is encouraged to play for Master Class.  The only requirement is that your piece be prepared to the best of your ability!  Let us know

                           what you plan to play by July 1.


Private Lessons - A private lesson may sometimes be arranged  if desired  (lesson fee determined by instructor and payable in cash)

Concerts

Wednesday evening -  Our outstanding faculty concert


Thursday evening - the  concert where students can choose what to present.  Perform on your own or gather a group together to perform!


Friday evening - All Workshop Concert, followed by the  Workshop party.
